Coir rope, charcoal, cloth, foam, anchor thread | 2021
The pandemic lockdown caused an unprecedented situation in everyone’s lives. Every person was going through a mental chaos of their own. I started this work in 2021 in response to that situation of lockdown imposed in 2020. The uneasiness, chaos, and instability caused by the pandemic lockdown.
I have knotted and weaved materials like cloth, rope and newspaper. I have expressed the confusion, grief and uneasiness through the twists and turns and layering of the materials. The newspaper used is from the time of the lockdown which I had archived from that time period. The coir rope as a material is used as a metaphor to depict the migrant labourers who were hit the most and had to travel by foot towards their home, many being dead along the way. I have made drawings with charcoal on the cloth showing my state of mind while revisiting that time again through those newspapers and through the memories of my own experience.
